Description
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the major research degree offered by the University of Melbourne. Candidates are admitted to the community of scholars in the discipline upon presentation of an original and innovative work of research that exhibits high academic merit. The candidature is conducted and reported under internationally benchmarked standards of excellence in academic supervision.
Structure
A thesis of 80,000-100,000 words is required in most cases; however, this may vary within some areas of study. The thesis should not exceed 100,000 words (or equivalent) without special approval from the Research Higher Degrees Committee. The components of research and assessment may vary in some areas of study and may for example, offer or require the undertaking of specialised fieldwork.
Major areas of study
Botany; chemisty; earth sciences; genetics; information systems; mathematics and statistics; optometry and vision sciences; physics and zoology.
